Photography composition tips from Dan Tsantilis, a local photographer:

  • You don’t need a fancy camera to take great pictures. Your phone camera is more than enough.
  • It’s all about the light and the moment.
  • To get the best possible results, take care with exposure, over exposure (too bright) can cause loss of detail in the image.
  •  Try tapping the area of focus on your phone screen – many phones will focus and adjust exposure on that area accordingly.
  • Try getting closer to the subject and avoid zooming in with devices – this usually just magnifies the image digitally with a loss of quality.
  • Play with filters to find a ‘look’ that matches the vibe of your shots.
  • Stand out from the crowd by finding unusual angles and choosing times when the light is interesting. Dawn and Dusk good for starters!
  • By flipping your phone upside down for example, you can get the lens very close to the ground.
  • Think about composition – take your time, have you framed the shot well?
  • Look at the background – any distractions?
  • Hold steady when you take the pic for the sharpest result.
  • Work the shot. Try reviewing and keep retaking until you’re happy.
  • When photographing people, communicate constantly. Give them direction to help them feel comfortable with you. This will help you get a natural result.
